Gutter Cleaning

Gutters are designed to be a seamless addition to your home. They protect its stability from the accumulation of snow and rainfall, and, when working properly, you will barely notice they are there.

But if they are left unchecked for long periods, they tend to accumulate leaves and debris that jeopardize their functionality. Clogged gutters can lead to a whole host of problems, including basement flooding, mold, and damage to your foundation.

Cleaning your gutters is an essential part of home upkeep. Read on to discover everything you need to know about gutter cleaning!

How Often Should I Clean My Gutters?

Gutters typically only need to be cleaned once or twice a year. The best time to do this task is mid-autumn, after the majority of leaves have fallen off the trees.

However, if you have many trees on your property, you may want to perform gutter cleaning in the spring as well. Installing a gutter guard system can lower the frequency of gutter maintenance.

How Do I Clean My Gutters?

To clean your own gutters, you will need:

  • A ladder tall enough
  • A second person to steady to ladder
  • Bucket
  • Trowel
  • Gardening gloves
  • Garden hose

Do not attempt to clean your gutters while it is still raining. Waiting a few days after the last rainfall will make the debris dryer and easier to collect.

Begin by climbing to the top of the ladder. Be sure to practice ladder safety by not overreaching or stepping on the topmost rung. Next, clean out the debris closest to the downspout.

Use a trowel for the dead leaves and your hands for the large sticks and twigs. Work your way down the gutters, collecting the debris in your bucket.

Finally, use a hose to wash out all the remaining pieces and residue. This time, start further from the downspout and move closer to it. During this, double check that the water is flowing freely from the downspout and no clogs remain.

Should I Clean the Gutters Myself, or Hire a Pro?

Cleaning your own gutters is a relatively easy task that should only take an hour or two, depending on the size of your home.

But if you have trouble balancing, are scared of heights, uncomfortable with bugs and critters, or simply don’t want to get your hands dirty, it is best to call the professionals.

The price of professional services depends on many factors, including the square footage being cleaned and the height of your home. For example, a single story home with about 200 sq. feet of gutters can cost around $100. A two-story home might be closer to $200, and a three-story home can cost something near $350.

Extra services, such as downspout cleaning, will increase the price.
